Spiritual But Not Religious: Finding Support After Leaving Organized Religion

Many people who leave an organized religion - whether through a gradual process of faith deconstruction or a decisive moment of walking away - discover something unexpected: the spiritual longing doesn't also leave. If you identify as spiritual but not religious, or find yourself somewhere in the complex territory of religious deconstruction, you are not alone.
The Grief of Leaving, and What Remains
Leaving a religious community means losing more than a set of beliefs. It often means losing a community, a sense of identity, familiar rituals, and a framework for understanding life's biggest questions. Whether you describe yourself as ex-religious, ex-evangelical, or simply someone who no longer fits inside the tradition you were raised in, the grief of that loss is real - and so is the spiritual hunger that persists long after you've left. Many people find that the longing for transcendence and meaning only grows louder once the institutional container is gone.
Spirituality Without Religion is a Valid Path
Research consistently shows that millions of people identify as Spiritual But Not Religious (SBNR): drawn toward meaning, depth, and connection beyond the material world, but unable to find a home in organized faith. If this describes you, your experience is not a contradiction or a failure. It is a genuine form of spiritual life, and it deserves to be tended with the same care as any other. Whether you are in the early, disorienting stages of a faith transition or further along in building a post-religious spirituality, your inner life is worthy of attention and support.
The Role of Spiritual Direction
Interfaith spiritual direction is designed precisely for those who exist outside (or between) religious traditions. As a spiritual director, I offer a contemplative, one-on-one space that requires no creed, no affiliation, and no certainty about what you believe. My role is to accompany you as you explore what still feels sacred, what you are grieving, and what your spiritual longing might be asking of you. There is no agenda here - only a welcoming space for whatever is most alive in your inner life.
Offering Support for Your Journey
If you have left organized religion but still feel that quiet pull toward something more, I invite you to reach out. Spiritual direction can offer the non-judgmental companionship you need to explore that longing honestly and at your own pace. Together, we can create a space where your spiritual life is honored - not in spite of the path you've taken, but because of it.
